Bakura is a planet on the outskirts of the galaxy. It had been a part of the Empire for 30 years.
Meanwhile, it was the very end of Episode 6, Return of the Jedi. The Rebels have just beaten Darth Vader and the Emperor and the Second Death Star at the Battle of Endor. Luke is very weary from his battle with the two Sith Lords, and spends some time recovering. Han tries to have sex with Leia, but is interrupted by Chewie, as the Falcon happens upon and captures an Empire message vehicle from Bakura. They're asking for help from the Emperor against a newly begun envasion from an unknown enemy.
Since the Emperor will naver receive this message, and no other help would come, they decide they should go try to help Bakura. Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, C3P0 and R2D2, all go in the Falcon. Jedi General Luke is put in charge of the whole operation which includes several Mid-sized freighters, and a squadron of X-wings. When they arrive, they chase off they invaders - temporarily. With minimal losses, Luke had observed that the enemy was trying to take as many prisoners as possible rather than killing the Bakurans. Upon the destruction of many of the enemies small and agile but seemingly unmanned fighters, he'd felt tremmers in the force when they'd been destroyed.
Dev - a force sensative human that was taken in by the Lizardlike warminded technologically advanced race, the Ssi-Ruuk. Dev assists his master in the entechment of a captured Bakuran, which is the absoption of the human's life force into a sort of computer mother board - the capture of a soul's energy in order to power a portion of a space fighter, or a battle droid. Dev thinks about how he can't wait for his turn to be enteched, then feels the presence of Luke through the force, and doesn't want to tell his Masters about it. But they drug him and hypnotize him, and make him tell them that he felt another who felt the force. He also reveals his pent up anger and hostility towards the Ssi-Ruuk for the destruction of his own home planet and native peoples.

this is about 1/3 of the book
